Beginning of the planning phase in 2012

Following in the footsteps of the successful project on Jakobshorn, Rinerhorn was also intended to make use of existing pressure pipes from snowmaking facilities to collect water and generate electricity through the use of a turbine. The planning phase for this project began in 2012 – and over the course of the following years, numerous critical clarifications and expert opinions were obtained to ensure the success of the initiative.

Project description

Two streams as an energy source

The upcoming project on Rinerhorn will harness the power of the Rieberbach and Leidbach streams to generate electricity through renewable energy sources via a power plant. Numerous critical clarifications were obtained during the concession phase, including evaluating the water volume in the streams and assessing the impact on the surrounding flora. Additionally, the pressure of the water was analysed to ensure it was sufficient for electricity production.

The majority of energy generated by the project will be used to cover local requirements. The electricity will power charging stations, heating systems, and snowmaking equipment, among other things.

Result

In operation and ready to experience from 2023

Upon completion, the new power station is expected to generate approximately 1.2 GWh of electricity annually. Additionally, at the valley station, a new power station is currently under construction, which will be open to the public, providing an opportunity to witness the production of energy through hydropower firsthand.
