Sparkling mountain lakes and babbling brooks: There’s no better way to cool off in summer than a dip in crisp alpine water. Refreshing yourself at a mountain lake, either during or after a hike, is particularly enjoyable. Relax by the shore or go for a swim – the choice is yours. To make planning easier, we've compiled the most beautiful mountain lakes in Davos Klosters. Just pack your favourite swimwear, and you're all set!

1. Grünsee
An alpine oasis in the mountains
Located near the Duranna pass and framed by rolling green hills, Lake Grünsee is one of the region’s most picturesque mountain lakes. It’s the perfect spot to pause, relax on the soft grass, and take a refreshing dip in crystal-clear waters – what could be better?
The hike around Parsenn and Gotschna to Lake Grünsee near Conters in the Prättigau valley offers stunning alpine vistas. Whether you’re coming from Klosters or Davos, the lake is easy to reach. We recommend: Take the cable car to quickly cover some altitude, then start your hike from the Weissfluhjoch or Gotschnagrat mountain stations towards Lake Grünsee.
2. Schwarzsee
Swimming and snacking in Davos Laret
A tranquil jetty, inviting picnic spots and fresh mountain air await you at the idyllic Lake Schwarzsee. A swim in its pleasantly cool waters followed by sunbathing on the shore is pure alpine bliss. Because the lake is relatively shallow, it warms up quicker than most other mountain lakes.
Located in Davos Laret, Lake Schwarzsee is easy to reach by train, bus or bike from both Davos and Klosters. Scenic hiking trails also lead to the lake, including one starting from the Gotschnabahn middle station at Gotschnaboden. The trail itself winds through a cool forest before descending gently to Ried. At 1,504 metres above sea level, the dark, reflective waters of Lake Schwarzsee beautifully mirror the surrounding alpine scenery.
The highlight: Don’t miss the swing that lets you launch straight into the water – an unforgettable way to dive in!
3. Jöriseen
Excursion to the Flüela valley
The hike to the Jöriseen lakes is a longer and more demanding tour, but the effort is well rewarded. These stunning lakes dazzle with colours ranging from deep blue and crystal clear to milky green – a true natural spectacle.
The best starting point is the Wägerhus/Abzw. Jöriseen bus stop in the Flüela valley. From there, a steady climb takes you to the Jöriflüelafurgga pass, where you’ll be treated to breathtaking views over the lakes below. After descending to the lakes, we recommend taking a well-earned break. Dip your feet in the cool water or, if you’re brave enough, go for a swim in the chilly alpine lakes!
4. Stadlersee am Jakobshorn
Barbecue with a view
Located high above Davos on Jakobshorn, Lake Stadlersee is a serene reservoir perfect for picnics and barbecues. While swimming isn’t permitted due to its artificial nature and lack of entry points, the lake’s deep blue waters and stunning alpine backdrop make it a wonderful spot to unwind and enjoy the view.
Ideal for a family day out, the route to the lake starts at Jschalp and climbs toward the Jakobshorn summit – either along the alpine road or a scenic hiking trail. After gaining about 500 metres in elevation, you’ll reach the Jatzhütte mountain hut. From there, a gentle forest trail leads to Lake Stadlersee, where scenic views over the Sertig valley and surrounding peaks await.
5. Strelasee
A hidden gem near the peaks
From Parsenn, take the Felsenweg or Panoramaweg trails to reach Strela pass. From there, it’s just a 20-minute hike to this refreshing destination. At 2,404 metres above sea level, the crisp mountain air and panoramic views make every step worthwhile, and a dip in the lake is the ultimate reward.
Tip: For an extra adventure, consider a summit hike to Schiahorn before heading back down to the valley with the Parsennbahn cable car.
6. Nüllisee Rinerhorn
Picnics by the lakeside
Nüllisee reservoir on Rinerhorn is one of the newest mountain lakes in the region and a popular summer retreat for families. With its scenic setting, it's great for picnicking, playing and relaxing by the water.
From the Rinerhorn mountain station, follow the trail down into the valley to reach the lake. A designated shallow area allows for splashing and cooling off at your own risk, though swimming is not permitted. A visit also pairs perfectly with other family activities nearby: For instance, be sure to stop by the petting zoo or enjoy an adventurous scooter ride. And for an extra treat, cool down with ice cream at Jatzmeder restaurant.
7. Öpfelsee Madrisa
Kneipp therapy and water fun for all ages
Öpfelsee lies right next to the Madrisa mountain station and offers a refreshing alpine experience for the whole family. With a Kneipp trail and the nearby Madrisa-Land, there’s no shortage of ways to cool down and have fun.
A treat for tired legs: Follow the barefoot Kneipp trail and let your senses awaken as you step into the invigoratingly cold waters of Lake Öpfelsee. Kids will love exploring Madrisa-Land, where they can splash around and even pull themselves across the water on a wooden raft. A summer day at Madrisa promises refreshing adventures and unforgettable memories for all family members
Cool down in the Davos mountains
Your summer escape to the Canton of Grisons
Looking to beat the summer heat? In Davos, situated at 1,560 metres above sea level, the air is noticeably cooler. While outdoor activities in the Swiss lowlands are often limited to the early morning hours, the alpine climate of the Canton of Grisons offers refreshingly cool nights and ideal daytime conditions for hiking and biking. You can spend your days exploring scenic mountain trails, discovering crystal-clear lakes and rivers, and enjoying picnics or barbecues at one of many inviting spots along the way. Just be sure to stay hydrated and pack the following essentials for your alpine adventure:
- a water bottle
- a hat or baseball cap
- sunglasses and suncream
Important: In addition to staying well-hydrated, it’s equally crucial to protect yourself from the sun, as UV rays are significantly stronger at higher altitudes. We look forward to welcoming you this summer and wish you a refreshing and memorable time in the Davos Klosters mountains!
